Traditional Metal Braces in Boise, Eagle, & Meridian, ID
Some things stand the test of time, and traditional metal braces are one of them. At Jacob Jarvis Orthodontics, we believe every smile is as unique as a fingerprint, and for many of our patients across Boise, Eagle, Meridian, and Parkcenter, traditional metal braces remain the most proven, reliable, and affordable path to the smile they’ve always wanted. Whether your child is just starting their orthodontic journey, your teen is ready to ditch the crowding, or you’re an adult looking to finally address a long-standing bite issue, Dr. Jacob Jarvis and our caring team are here to walk you through every step. Treatment isn’t a burden here; it’s something we make work beautifully around your life.
What Are Traditional Metal Braces And How Do They Work?
Traditional metal braces are the most widely used orthodontic treatment in the world, and for good reason. They work by attaching small, high-grade stainless steel brackets to the surface of each tooth, connected by a thin, flexible archwire. Over time, gentle and consistent pressure from that wire guides your teeth into their ideal positions, correcting crowding, spacing, bite issues, and more.
At Jacob Jarvis Orthodontics, we use the latest low-profile brackets and lighter wires that make today’s metal braces significantly more comfortable and discreet than the braces of a generation ago. You get all the power of a time-tested treatment with the comfort standards of modern orthodontics.
As treatment progresses, Dr. Jarvis makes precise adjustments to the archwire at each appointment, gradually and carefully moving your teeth toward their final, beautiful position.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Metal Braces? Kids, Teens & Adults in Idaho
Traditional metal braces are one of the most versatile orthodontic treatments available, suitable for patients of virtually any age. At Jacob Jarvis Orthodontics, we treat kids as young as seven, teens, and adults, and we tailor every treatment plan to the individual.
Metal Braces for Kids
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic screening at age seven. By this point, enough permanent teeth have come in for Dr. Jarvis to identify developing issues before they become more complex. Early intervention with braces can guide jaw development, correct bite problems, and create space for emerging teeth, often making future treatment shorter and less costly. Learn more!
Metal Braces for Teens
The teenage years are the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reason. With most permanent teeth in place and natural growth still happening, treatment tends to be efficient and effective. Metal braces are the go-to choice for teens with moderate to complex cases, including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Learn more!
Metal Braces for Adults
It’s never too late to invest in your smile, and more adults than ever are choosing orthodontic treatment. At Jacob Jarvis Orthodontics, we treat patients in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Traditional metal braces remain one of the most effective treatments for complex adult cases, including those involving bite correction or significant tooth movement. Adults who want a more discreet option can also explore our clear ceramic braces, Damon® system, or Invisalign®, but for those with complex needs on a budget, metal braces deliver exceptional results. Orthodontic Conditions We Correct with Metal Braces
At Jacob Jarvis Orthodontics, Dr. Jarvis has the training and expertise to handle everything from simple alignment corrections to complex bite reconstruction. Traditional metal braces are particularly well-suited for:
- Crowded Teeth: when there isn't enough space in your jaw for all your teeth to sit comfortably
- Spacing & Gaps: extra space between teeth that affects aesthetics and function
- Overbite: when upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth excessively
- Underbite: when the lower jaw protrudes forward, causing the lower teeth to sit in front of the upper teeth
- Crossbite: when upper and lower teeth don't align properly side to side
- Open Bite: when the upper and lower front teeth don't meet when biting down
- Deep Bite: an exaggerated overbite that can cause wear, discomfort, and jaw issues
- Protruding Teeth: teeth that jut forward, whether from genetics or habits like thumb-sucking
- TMJ / TMD-related misalignment: bite issues that contribute to jaw pain, headaches, and discomfort

Life with Metal Braces: Tips for a Smooth Treatment
Adapting to life with braces is simpler than most people expect. Here’s what our patients find most helpful:- Oral hygiene: brush after every meal and floss daily using a floss threader or water flosser. Clean brackets and wires carefully to prevent plaque build-up.
- Foods to avoid: sticky, chewy, or hard foods (caramel, popcorn, hard candy, ice) can damage brackets or bend wires. Soft foods are your new best friend, especially after adjustments.
- Soreness after adjustments: mild tenderness for 2 to 3 days after each appointment is normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods help.
- Mouth guards: If your teen plays sports, a protective mouth guard is a must. We can advise on the best options for brace-wearers.
- Orthodontic wax: Place a small piece of wax on any bracket or wire that irritates until you can come in for an adjustment.
- Emergency appointments: We offer prompt attention for broken brackets or loose wires. Contact us right away, and we'll get you seen quickly.
